Heat Treating Schedule for Vintage, Patina’d High Carbon Steel
-
Normalize: Place steel in forge and heat until it looks about right. Remove and air cool while contemplating your life choices.
-
Anneal: Bury in a bucket of rice, sand, or your deepest regrets. Leave overnight.
-
Hardening: Heat until it reaches a glowing shade of uncertainty. Quench in a mixture of oil, brine, or yesterday’s coffee—whichever feels most historically accurate.
-
Tempering: Toss in an oven preheated to “eh, that should be fine” degrees. Bake until your shop smells questionable or until your significant other asks what you’re burning.
-
Final Inspection: If it survived, congratulations! If not, well… it was vintage for a reason.
Disclaimer: Results may vary. Probably not suitable for actual knife making. Use at your own risk (and with a fire extinguisher nearby).
